Satellite capabilities and coverage
The ASTRA fleet consists of 14 satellites positioned at prime orbital positions 19.2º east, 28.2º east, 23.5º east, 5º east and 31.5º east.
The satellites located at 19.2º east are mainly used for DTH services to large audiences in markets like Germany, France and Spain.
The satellites at 28.2º east provide DTH services to the UK and Ireland.
23.5º east is ASTRA’s latest hot spot for DTH and broadband services, currently focusing on dynamic markets such as Italy, Benelux and Central and Eastern Europe.
The innovative satellite broadband service ASTRA2Connect is also transmitted from 23.5º east and is available in numerous markets across Europe.
The satellites at 5º east provide DTH services in the Nordic countries, the Baltics, Eastern Europe and sub-Saharan Africa.
The satellites at 31.5º east primarily offer capacity suitable for cable contribution, DTT and other terrestrial feeds across Europe.
In addition, ASTRA operates satellites at 2ºE which offer OU/SNG capacity.
YahLive, an ASTRA and YahSat partnership, will use the YahSat 1A spacecraft at 52.5º east to offer DTH coverage in the MENA region and south-west Asia.
Why satellite?
Satellite means communications without limits. It means maximum bandwidth without the restraints on reach. Whatever your communication needs, satellite will reach more people everywhere.
Distance independent, flexible and rapidly deployable
Satellite connections transcend physical barriers and cover distances better than ground-based networks. They can be established almost immediately, virtually anywhere. Satellite links are also cost effective, as users only pay for the capacity they need, rather than building costly infrastructure that could be underused or prove inadequate.
A natural for broadcast and multicast
Satellite's unique ability to transmit the same signal to all points within an area makes it ideal for broadcasting television and radio signals, and for multicasting data for applications as diverse as corporate networks, government programmes and internet surfing.
Application independent
ASTRA can provide satellite connectivity to suit any application for media organisations, enterprises and ISPs. Whether it is for television and radio broadcasting or contribution, corporate VSAT networks or internet trunking, our fleet of high-performance satellites can take multimedia content and information where and when business demands.
